Australia Study trip March 9-15, 2020

The Peace Islands Institute is pleased to announce our intercultural-interfaith study trip to Australia from March 9 – 15, 2020. Applications for this trip are currently open, and those individuals with an interest are encouraged to apply. There are only limited spaces, so apply as soon as possible.

The study trip will allow participants to learn about issues of diversity and make comparisons and contrasts with the United States as both countries have had challenges dealing with civil rights, immigration, minorities, and faith, and race relations. Close to 30% of Australians are born overseas, and 3.5% are of indigenous background. Here is a short article about Australia’s cultural diversity by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The trip will entail meetings with policymakers, academics, media, activists, and advocates, and faith and cultural leaders among others to probe and discover the challenges Australians have faced and find out about some of the success stories as well as current and ongoing difficulties. Participants also have some downtime to enjoy the cultural and historical sites of its three major cities – Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra.
The trip will be led by our Executive Director, Emre Celik, who himself is an Australian and has worked across three states in Australia in positions focussed on diversity, interfaith and multicultural issues. The cost of this trip is $2000, and this will cover all local accommodation (twin-share), food and transport between hotel and meetings and cultural sites. Domestic flights will also be covered. Participants will have to purchase their own international tickets to Melbourne and return from Sydney.

Here is the link to the draft itinerary. If you are interested and would like updates and an application form for this trip, kindly register your interest via this link. Space is limited, and preference will be given to people in the wider New York region.
